Mahalo Crowdsourcing – Outsourcing Interestingly23 Dec

Mahalo‘s version of paying for content writers and their monetization methods are not new, as many other sites have been doing this for a number of years.  What stands out about their system in particular is the different methods through which the writers can get paid.

Apparently, they’ve done their research by looking worldwide at different ways people get involved and “buy-in” to sticking with their writing long-term.  One of the most effective methods they’ve found is that paying through credits (Think Zynga or any number of online games) is quite effective in building an amazing network of dedicated followers or workers.

There’s definitely been some heated discussion about their seo tactics which we won’t get into on this post, but allowing english speaking writers (especially in 3rd world countries) to participate in up-front cash and long-term revenue is bringing smiles to tons of hopeful writers in the Philippines, India, and throughout the world.  From Mahalo’s perspective, it’s MUCH less expensive than hiring and maintaining long-term staff writers and sharing in the revenue is much better business model, allowing them to scale their content network massively.  Listing the long-tail searches for the content writers to focus on is brilliant as well…they already know expected revenue based on their AdSense placement.

Congrats to Jason Calacanis and Mahalo for making it big-time with an interesting business strategy.

Submission For WORST English Description On A Product EVER!23 Jun

Living in Davao City, Philippines, you sometimes see some poorly written English for advertising on signs, hand-outs, billboards, etc.  At first, you’re amazed with all of the errors but it kind of grows on you after a while and you don’t seem to notice it as much.  The other day, I was at Gaisano mall (G-Mall) looking for an additional power cable for my laptop.  While I was at the store, I noticed behind the glass a cleaning package for LCD screens.

Knowing that I’d neglected my screen for FAR too long, I decided to pick it up as well…especially because they are “Expert in cleaning screen”

I didn’t notice most of the text until I got it home, but had a good laugh about it.  Poor sentence structure, outrageous spelling errors, and ridiculous grammar errors abound:

Well at least I have “Guarantee period:two years” eh?  Maybe that covers my dying laptop too since I’m using their product on it?  Fat chance there…

BPO Strategy to Effective Offshore Outsourcing03 Jun

By Ivana Lewis

Offshore outsourcing involves a relatively greater geographical distance between the outsourcing company and its client. In other words, business organizations outsource their work to the BPO companies that are located overseas. Thus, the distance between the outsourcer and the outsourcing company is quite huge and communication between the two parties is not very frequent. It might not be possible for the clients to meet their outsourcing partners frequently in order to keep a check on their activities. But still, offshore outsourcing is gaining popularity and all because of the trustworthy performances of the BPO companies. They assure their clients with the delivery of quality service within the right time. (more…)

Working Through Cultural differences at a BPO: An Employee’s Perspective16 Mar

This post was written by Jazzenhea Barro, a valued team member at TryBPO.com.  She’s known as a “jack of all trades” and has a good understanding of the multiple projects and campaigns run at the company and provides unique insight into working through cultural differences at a BPO.

Cultural differences have never been an issue for me and for some other Filipinos. Dealing with a diversity of races is not outrageously challenging, but admittedly sometimes we all have a hard time coping with other people’s attitude and culture, and that is why we should view it as a challenge. In BPO companies in the Philippines, it’s common to be exposed to this type of challenge and looking at creative ways to meet that challenge. (more…)
